Studies on Growth Characteristics of ¢¥ Sanghai Early ¢¥ Garlic

Abstract
Effects of cold storage of seed bulbs and light break treatment on top growth, bulbing, and secondary growth of garlic cv. Sanghai early were investigated.
The results obtained are summarized as follows.
1. The cold storage of seed bulbs resulted in the greatest number of alive green leaves at maximum growth stage in the middle of April but less leaf number at maturity in May.
2. Leaf blade, sheath lengths, and plant heights markedly increased, and plants matured earlier as the cold storage period increased.
3. The leaf width of cold stored seed bulbs was narrower in ¢¥Sanghai early¢¥ but was wider in `Daegu native¢¥.
4. Leaf sheath diameter was not affected by any treatment. Bulb diameter of ¢¥Sanghai early¢¥ increased more at the early growth stage in 30 days cold storage treatment under natural day length and at later growth stages in normal temperature storage under the treatment of light break. However, bulb diameter of `Daegu native¢¥ tended to be increased by light break regardless of the day length.
5. The bulb yield of ¢¥Sanghai early¢¥ was increased by light break and was greater in the cold storage treatments of 0 and 30 days than in 60 days.
6. Secondary growth percentage of ¢¥Sanghai early¢¥ was significantly decreased by light break but increased with the increasing cold storage period. Secondary growth percentage of ¢¥Daegu native¢¥ was not much affected by cold storage and day length but tended to be reduced by light break and longer cold storage.
